Epson expands Nairobi office by 50% with REC-backed sustainability push
Epson has opened a significantly expanded regional office in Nairobi, increasing its Kenyan footprint by 50% and investing KES 19,417,500 in the new facility. The site will function as a hub for East African operations, housing a customer-facing showroom, training capacity and partner-enablement infrastructure. The company says East Africa is a priority growth market within its broader Middle East, Turkey, Africa and Central and West Asia (META-CWA) regional cluster.
The expansion follows rising demand for business printing and visual solutions in emerging markets, where Epson's regional leadership argues that proximity to partners and in-market service capability are becoming competitive differentiators. The Nairobi office joins a network of demonstration facilities and support offices the company is building across the META-CWA region.
Renewable energy certificates and decarbonisation targets
Alongside the physical expansion, Epson has extended its use of renewable energy certificates (RECs) to cover 10 sites across the region. The offices included span Kenya, Johannesburg, Cape Town, Dubai, Saudi Arabia, Morocco, Türkiye, Israel, Ukraine and a UAE experience centre. Between March 2025 and April 2026, the company purchased 416 MWh of RECs to match the combined electricity consumption of those sites.
RECs are market instruments that allow an organisation to claim that a quantity of electricity equivalent to its consumption was generated from renewable sources, without requiring a direct physical connection to renewable generation. They are widely used by multinationals to meet voluntary emissions targets, though their environmental additionality is contested: critics note that purchasing RECs does not necessarily drive new renewable capacity. Epson's approach sits within its Environmental Vision 2050, a long-term commitment to carbon negativity and zero consumption of underground resources by 2050.
Neil Colquhoun, President of Epson META-CWA, said the company's "efficient, compact and precise engineering" philosophy means its environmental commitments and commercial growth targets reinforce one another. The company did not provide a specific carbon-reduction figure attributable to the REC purchases, nor an audited emissions baseline for the region.
Market context
The story is primarily a corporate office expansion with a sustainability overlay rather than a cleantech deployment or capital transaction. Epson's REC programme is a credible but modest decarbonisation measure; 416 MWh of matched consumption over 13 months across 10 offices is a relatively small volume in the context of the global voluntary renewable energy market, where hyperscalers and industrial corporates routinely procure RECs and power purchase agreements measured in terawatt-hours.
Africa's renewable energy certificate market is at an early stage compared with European and North American equivalents. The absence of a standardised, exchange-traded REC mechanism across Sub-Saharan Africa means corporate buyers typically rely on project-specific instruments or international certificates. Epson's extension of REC coverage to Nairobi is a small but visible signal of that market beginning to attract participation from mid-tier corporate buyers, not only utilities and large energy consumers.
The product launches referenced in the release, including updated EcoTank ink-tank printers and the LifeStudio projector range, are consumer and SME technology products rather than cleantech infrastructure. The company's claim that its Micro Piezo Heat-Free print technology uses up to 96% less energy than conventional thermal inkjet printing is not independently verified in the release. Investors focused on the energy transition will find limited actionable signal here beyond Epson's stated directional commitment to its 2050 targets.
