Pyxis launches solar-assisted river vessel Pyxis L in Singapore

Singapore maritime start-up Pyxis has unveiled a solar-assisted electric bumboat for private dining and events on the Singapore River.

Pyxis, a Singapore-based maritime electrification start-up, has launched Pyxis L, a solar-assisted electric passenger vessel designed for private dining and events on the Singapore River. The vessel was developed in partnership with Singapore River Cruise (SRC), which has already confirmed an order for a second unit, signalling early commercial traction for the hospitality-focused platform.

The vessel is built on Pyxis's established catamaran hull, using its core electric propulsion, battery and digital-monitoring systems. The new variant adapts that platform into a purpose-built hospitality space, with air-conditioned interiors accommodating 24 guests indoors and a further 12 on the open deck. The company says it can operate for up to 8.5 hours between charges, sufficient for an evening dining cruise or a multi-hour event booking.

The technology

Ten rooftop solar panels provide close to 5.8 kW of generating capacity during daylight hours, reducing the vessel's dependence on shore power and, according to Pyxis, allowing any surplus to be exported to the grid. Shore charging is rated at 10 kW and the company says a full charge takes approximately six to seven hours, shortened when solar charging runs concurrently. Fleet operations are managed through Electra, Pyxis's proprietary remote-monitoring platform, which tracks vessel systems in real time.

The solar-assist architecture is best characterised as a hybrid supplement rather than primary propulsion: the vessel remains fundamentally battery-electric, with solar reducing charge frequency rather than providing propulsion directly. Pyxis did not disclose the battery capacity, total energy consumption per voyage, or the net carbon saving relative to a diesel-powered equivalent vessel.

Market context

Maritime electrification in short-sea and inland waterway segments is gaining commercial momentum, particularly across Southeast Asia, where port authorities are tightening emissions rules and urban waterway operators face growing pressure to decarbonise tourist and commuter fleets. Singapore's Maritime and Port Authority, whose chief executive officiated at the Pyxis L launch, has been an active supporter of the city-state's maritime green corridor strategy.

Pyxis was founded in 2022 and has moved quickly through a series of firsts: it launched X Tron, described as Singapore's first fully electric port passenger launch, in March 2024, and opened the first public marine electric charging point at Marina South Pier in the same year in partnership with SP Group. Pyxis R, introduced in 2025 and described as Singapore's first solar-powered river boat, is the direct predecessor to the Pyxis L platform.

The broader market for electric and hybrid inland and coastal passenger vessels is pre-commercial at scale globally, with a small number of operators in Norway, the Netherlands and Southeast Asia the furthest along. Key commercial barriers remain battery energy density for longer routes, shore-power infrastructure availability and the green premium over diesel on a cost-per-passenger basis.

Pyxis has not disclosed funding raised to date, its current production capacity, or a build-out schedule beyond the confirmed second SRC vessel. Tommy Phun, the company's founder, framed the Pyxis L launch around interior experience rather than propulsion technology, noting the vessel is designed as "a space for hosting, where the experience on board matters as much as the journey itself."

Outlook

The confirmed second-unit order from SRC represents a modest but concrete commercial signal. Pyxis will need to demonstrate replicable demand across other river and coastal operators in Singapore and the broader region before the model scales. The company's stated ambition is commercialisation across sister ports in the region, which would imply partnerships with port authorities that have different regulatory and infrastructure profiles from Singapore's highly controlled marine environment.

For investors tracking maritime decarbonisation, the key milestones to watch are a named funding round, expansion of the shore-charging network beyond Marina South Pier, and any replication of the Pyxis L hospitality format in a second market.
