Deep Isolation passes 100 patents in nuclear waste disposal tech
Deep Isolation Nuclear has announced it now holds more than 100 issued patents worldwide, marking a portfolio milestone the company says reflects a decade of engineering development in deep-borehole disposal of spent nuclear fuel (SNF) and high-level radioactive waste (HLW).
The Berkeley, California-based firm's intellectual property spans what it describes as an end-to-end disposal ecosystem: repository architecture, geologic site characterisation, canister and packaging systems, emplacement and retrieval mechanisms, and long-term repository monitoring. Patents and applications cover major nuclear markets in North America, Europe and Asia.
The technology and the pilot
Deep Isolation's core approach uses directional drilling — a technique borrowed from the oil and gas sector — to place waste canisters in horizontal, slanted or vertical boreholes deep underground, bypassing the need for a purpose-built mined repository. Its Universal Canister System (UCS), developed over three years under funding from the US Department of Energy's Advanced Research Projects Agency–Energy (ARPA-E), is engineered to handle SNF from both the existing light-water reactor fleet and emerging advanced reactor designs through integrated storage, transportation and final disposal.
In January 2026 the company launched a full-scale, at-depth Commercialisation Pilot at Cameron, Texas, in collaboration with the Deep Borehole Demonstration Center, Halliburton, Amentum, NAC International and Occlusion Nuclear Solutions. Eric Knox, vice president of strategic development at Amentum, said Deep Isolation's portfolio is "supported by detailed engineering, prototyping, testing and supply-chain capabilities," adding that Amentum is working with supply-chain partners toward a commercial pilot at Cameron.
Market context
Nuclear waste disposal is a long-running bottleneck for the global nuclear industry, and one whose urgency is rising as governments accelerate reactor deployment. Finland's Onkalo facility is the only deep geological repository (DGR) under active construction globally; most countries with civil nuclear programmes have not yet identified, licenced or begun building a permanent disposal site. The UK, the US and numerous other nations continue to accumulate SNF in interim surface storage.
The renewed interest in small modular reactors (SMRs) and advanced reactors — whose waste profiles differ from those of conventional light-water designs — adds further complexity and potential market opportunity. Several developers, including Deep Isolation, are positioning borehole disposal as a faster-to-licence alternative to conventionally mined repositories, though the technology has not yet demonstrated commercial-scale operations.
Deep Isolation is not the only entrant in this space: academic and government-funded borehole disposal programmes exist in Sweden, Switzerland and the UK, and the competitive landscape for licenced disposal solutions will depend heavily on how individual national regulators assess the technology over the coming decade.
From a capital perspective, the sector remains dependent on government contracts, demonstration grants and strategic partnerships with major engineering contractors rather than private offtake. Deep Isolation's investor-relations contact listed alongside its SEC filings suggests the company is publicly registered, though it has not disclosed a current funding round or revenue in this release.
Policy path
US nuclear waste policy is shaped by the Nuclear Waste Policy Act and a long-stalled federal programme to site a permanent repository at Yucca Mountain. The current administration's push to expand nuclear capacity — including through the ADVANCE Act signed in 2024 — adds political momentum to waste-management planning, even if the legislative path to a licenced federal DGR remains uncertain. For Deep Isolation, the Cameron pilot represents the critical near-term milestone: a successful at-depth demonstration could accelerate regulatory engagement and attract the utility and government contracts the company will need to commercialise.
