IBA to lead EU-funded LIFEDESTINY project on PFAS destruction
IBA (Ion Beam Applications S.A., Euronext: IBAB), the Belgian particle accelerator group, has been named coordinator of LIFEDESTINY, a new European LIFE programme project targeting the permanent destruction of PFAS (per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances), the synthetic compounds widely known as "forever chemicals". The four-year project, running from September 2026 to August 2030, carries total eligible costs of €4.4 million and has received a maximum EU grant of €2.65 million, representing a 60% funding rate from the European Climate, Infrastructure and Environment Executive Agency (CINEA).
PFAS are a broad family of highly stable fluorinated compounds used extensively in industrial coatings, firefighting foam and consumer products. Their persistence in soil, groundwater and biological tissue has made them a priority remediation challenge across Europe and North America. Current disposal routes, chiefly containment, landfill and high-temperature incineration, are energy-intensive, expensive and do not guarantee permanent elimination.
The technology approach
LIFEDESTINY's full name, DEmonstration of Sustainable Technologies for INnovative PFAS remediation strategy, signals its scope: the project aims to validate an end-to-end treatment chain covering contaminated industrial wastewater, soil, sludge and spent granular activated carbon. IBA will contribute its Rhodotron electron beam accelerator to break down PFAS in both liquid and solid waste streams. Alongside IBA, Haemers Technologies will treat contaminated solids through its Krysalis thermal desorption process, enabling potential material reuse. NOVOBIOM will deploy biosurfactant-based extraction to concentrate PFAS from soil and sludge before destruction. DEME Environnement and BESIX Environment bring industrial remediation and process scale-up capability, while CEBEDEAU handles wastewater concentration and treatment-efficiency validation. Carmeuse Europe will neutralise fluoride-bearing effluents and explore by-product reuse. District Cleantech supports dissemination and the pathway toward an industrial PFAS treatment hub.
The consortium's stated ambition is to reduce energy consumption, CO₂ emissions and hazardous residues relative to conventional incineration, though the release does not quantify those reductions against a verified baseline.
Market and policy context
PFAS remediation is an emerging but rapidly expanding environmental services market. The EU's PFAS restriction proposal under REACH, alongside tightening drinking-water limits under the revised EU Drinking Water Directive, is sharpening regulatory pressure on industrial operators and public water utilities across member states. In the United States, the Environmental Protection Agency's designation of certain PFAS as hazardous substances under CERCLA in 2024 has accelerated liability-driven remediation spending. Both dynamics are drawing capital into the remediation technology sector.
Electron beam treatment and advanced thermal desorption are among a cluster of destruction technologies competing with emerging alternatives such as electrochemical oxidation, supercritical water oxidation and sonochemical processes. None has yet achieved widespread commercial deployment at industrial scale, making publicly funded demonstration projects like LIFEDESTINY important proof points for private investors and regulators evaluating which technologies can close the cost and scalability gap.
Catherine Vandenborre, Chief Ventures and Corporate Officer at IBA, said the project "reflects IBA's mission to protect, enhance and save lives, extending the impact of our accelerator expertise to one of today's most pressing environmental and public health challenges."
Next milestones
Beyond the demonstration phase, the consortium plans to use LIFEDESTINY as a foundation for a full-scale PFAS treatment centre capable of industrial deployment. The key near-term deliverables will be validated destruction efficiency data and a residue-safety assessment from CEBEDEAU, expected to inform any future investment decision on a commercial hub. Investors and regulators tracking the PFAS remediation space will look for the project to publish audited performance figures and to name any industrial offtakers or anchor customers for a scaled facility.
