Solar Experts Costa Rica, a Guanacaste-based solar installer, has made its full archive of client proposals publicly available online, including line-item hardware costs, engineering fees, and projected returns. The company says the move is a direct response to what it describes as endemic pricing opacity in Costa Rica's residential and off-grid solar market, where quote variations of 30 to 50 per cent for equivalent equipment are, it claims, routine when installers are dealing with foreign buyers.

The published proposals cover systems ranging from remote off-grid setups to whole-house battery installations at luxury villas and commercial estates. Each listing itemises hardware specifications, including Deye hybrid inverters and 48-volt lithium iron phosphate (LiFePO4) battery banks, alongside turnkey capital costs and estimated payback periods.

The commercial case

The company's founder and chief executive, Michiel Bosman, said the open-book approach reflects a direct-import model that removes intermediary markups. "Transparency builds trust," he said. "By eliminating the middleman and showcasing direct-import logistics, we can offer lower pricing and empower buyers with actual data for everything from off-grid homes to 5-star luxury villas."

One published example in the release cites a $55,136 turnkey system projected to deliver $244,086 in cumulative energy savings over 20 years, implying a 21.7 per cent internal rate of return. The company says those figures incorporate conservative assumptions on utility price escalation. These are developer-modelled projections and have not been independently verified; actual returns will depend on grid tariff movements, system performance, and local regulation.

Market context

Costa Rica is an unusual solar market. The country already generates the vast majority of its electricity from hydropower and geothermal sources, meaning grid-tied solar competes against relatively low and stable wholesale power prices. The stronger commercial case sits in off-grid and backup applications, particularly for properties in Guanacaste's Pacific coast region where grid reliability is inconsistent and electricity tariffs for commercial and tourism users are among the highest in Central America.
